NEW DELHI: Employees are mapping growth trajectories by the stars in a volatile job market rife with layoffs, hiring slowdowns and new work models.
Whether they are disgruntled with performance appraisals, or anticipating the next one, laid off, or just trying to figure out how they can align with bosses and peers — professionals are increasingly turning to astrologers and tarot readers.
Although the trend encompasses the gamut, from entry level to leadership, more of mid-senior talent tends to seek counsel from crystal gazers, said experts.
A senior executive at a consumer goods company took the help of an astrologer to navigate a merger. Another CXO at a global financial institution sought help from an astrological consultancy before accepting a relocation role in Europe. He also delayed his relocation by three months as his charts suggested that a little wait would be more favourable.
More and more in India Inc are tapping astrology platforms as a result of this reliance.
Astroyogi, for instance, has seen a 30-40% increase in career-related queries in the last few months.
Appraisal season is a high-stakes time. People are anxious about promotions, raises, or whether they should start exploring new opportunities,” said Meena Kapoor, founder of Astroyogi.
Appraisal Season Boom
“People are now using astrology not just for reassurance, but for timing and clarity, especially in careers,” said Kapoor.
Career-focused inquiries have evolved substantially over recent years, with queries becoming more targeted, such as, “Is Q3 the right time to make a move?” or “How will this new leadership affect my trajectory?"
Astrotalk, which regularly conducts internal surveys using its own database, finds that career-related queries have been on a rise since the pandemic. “We are also getting more and more queries on layoffs post-pandemic,” said its founder, Puneet Gupta.
VAMA app cofounder Aacharya Dev said, “The shift reflects deeper anxieties about market volatility and industry sustainability.” He said consultations from salaried professionals during this March-April appraisal season jumped 40% from the preceding months.
With the rampant layoffs, particularly in startups and technology companies, VAMA has seen a 25% rise in consultations related to job stability compared to prepandemic levels. Gen Z clients particularly seek guidance on future-proof skills and industries, said Dev.
Professionals too are seeking cosmic validation that their career paths align with their authentic purpose in uncertain times, said another astrologer.
Dr Shilpi Mohan, a tarot card reader who is also a cardiologist, confirms the trend. She is inundated with queries from professionals to check the energies of their seniors and colleagues.
“They are also keen on knowing whether they will get recognition and salary hike,” she said.
Mohan said many professionals are seeking guidance on whether they will be able to retain their jobs. “Some are also asking us if they will get a new job with a salary hike,” she said.
