Karwa Chauth 2025 Chandra Puja: Every year, the Karwa Chauth fast is observed on the day of Vakratunda Sankashti. That day is the Chaturthi Tithi of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the month of Kartik. It is also known as Kartik Sankashti Chaturthi. On Karwa Chauth, married women observe a fast from sunrise to moonrise. When the moon rises, they worship the moon and offer Arghya (water offering). Worshipping and offering Arghya to the moon is considered essential during the Karwa Chauth fast. Let's learn from Kashi's astrologer, Chakrapani Bhatt, what will happen if you don't worship and offer Arghya during the Karwa Chauth fast.

The Importance of Moon Worship and Arghya on the Karwa Chauth Fast
Astrologer Bhatt says that among all the fasts of Karwa Chauth or Sankashti Chaturthi, worshipping and offering Arghya to the moon at night is crucial because without it, the fast will not be complete. Without it, you cannot even break the fast.
You might think that if you only worship Ganesha, Goddess Gauri, and Lord Shiva, but don't worship the moon and offer arghya to it, the fast is over. This isn't true. The fast is complete only after you break the fast. It's a mandatory rule of Karva Chauth to break the fast by drinking water from your husband's hand after offering arghya to the moon.
That's why the moon is worshipped on Karva Chauth.
According to mythology, when Ganesha was given an elephant's head, the moon god laughed at his appearance. Seeing this, Ganesha felt insulted and became angry. The moon was proud of its beauty. Ganesha then cursed the moon god, saying that he would lose his radiance and beauty. As a result, the moon god began to lose its lustre.

Realizing his mistake, he apologized to Ganesha and prayed for his release from the curse. Ganesha said that the curse cannot be reversed, but your radiance will decrease for 15 days during the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) and increase for 15 days during the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight). On the full moon, you will completely illuminate the world.
Genesis also blessed the Moon God, stating that anyone fasting on the Chaturthi (fourth day) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) and worshipping Ganpati Bappa must worship the Moon and offer Arghya (water offering) at night, otherwise the fast will be incomplete. Since then, worshipping the Moon and offering Arghya has become mandatory on Sankashti Chaturthi, the Chaturthi (fourth day) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of every month. Only after this is the fast is broken. Karva Chauth is also observed on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi.
Karva Chauth is on October 10th
This year, the Karva Chauth fast will be observed on October 10th. Moonrise will occur at 8:13 pm. The Moon will be worshipped and offered Arghya from 8:13 pm onwards.
