Send Push

The wait is nearly over—racing enthusiasts are getting ready to shift their focus to Pune, as the monsoon racing season kicks off on July 18. Over the next three months, the historic Pune racecourse will host 23 days of thrilling action, featuring marquee events such as the prestigious Pune Derby, the St. Leger, and a series of competitive Class One races.

While the excitement among racing fans is palpable, all eyes will be on the condition of the track. Pune has already been receiving steady rainfall, and the showers are expected to continue through November. That makes the job of maintaining a safe and race-ready track all the more crucial.

Enter Itaat Khan—the unsung hero of the monsoon season—who, along with a dedicated team of 20 ground staff members, has been working tirelessly to ensure the track remains in prime condition despite the challenges posed by the weather.

“Rain has always been a major factor during the Pune season, which is why we have a dedicated monsoon track,” explains Khan. “Our aim is to ensure that not a single racing day is lost. We’re doing everything we can to deliver a seamless season.”

When asked whether the races would go on regardless of the downpour, Khan remains pragmatic yet optimistic. “You can’t fight nature. But what we can do is prepare the track so well that racing remains safe and competitive, even in wet conditions.”
