Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): In a significant step towards ensuring safety of wildlife and personnel involved in conservation efforts, Kuno National Park has introduced a comprehensive manual titled “Manual on Chemical Immobilisation and Safe Handling of Cheetahs.”
The manual, which was officially released by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on the occasion of Global Tiger Day, sets a new benchmark for standard procedures in cheetah management.
The manual has been designed for field personnel and veterinary professionals engaged in cheetah operations. It provides detailed protocols on various aspects including drug selection and dosage, treatment kits, equipment, behavioural assessment and post-immobilisation care. It also outlines roles and responsibilities of teams during capture and transport.
Field Director Uttar Kumar Sharma said that the manual brings together consolidated knowledge and field experience, aimed at balancing control with care.

One critical focus of the manual is on climate-related challenges, particularly during monsoon. It highlights how high humidity levels, when combined with elevated temperatures, can impair a cheetah’s natural cooling process.
This may lead to increased respiratory effort, elevating stress levels and potentially endangering the animal’s wellbeing. To counter this, the manual recommends enhanced air circulation, use of cooling techniques and constant monitoring during immobilisation and transportation.
The guide emphasises the need for rapid assessment of a cheetah’s behaviour and surroundings prior to tranquilisation. Teams are instructed to identify potential escape routes and ensure safety in the immobilisation zone.
Technical instructions include use of dart guns, dosage calculations, monitoring of blood pressure, hydration levels, pulse oximetry and managing emergencies.
The manual also includes practical checklists and treatment kit details for field staff. It is expected to serve as a reference standard for wildlife professionals, not just at Kuno, but wherever cheetahs are managed in captivity or wild settings.
