Mumbai: In a major boost to passenger amenities, DMart Foundation's proposal to construct, renovate, operate and maintain all toilet blocks at Thane and Kalyan Railway Stations under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative has been approved by the competent railway authority.
As per the plan, DMart will bear the full cost of construction, renovation, operation and upkeep of all toilet blocks at both stations, ensuring a clean and accessible experience for daily commuters.
"The scope of work includes deploying dedicated housekeeping staff to manage the toilet facilities round-the-clock, with a special commitment that passengers will not be charged for usage of either urinals or lavatories. Notably, the initiative excludes the PF 2/3 toilet block at the CSMT end of Kalyan station, which is scheduled for demolition due to ongoing construction of the new Lokgram foot over bridge" said an official.
"As part of the expansion, DMart will construct a new toilet block at the Karjat end of PF 6/7 at Kalyan station. The existing Divyangjan (differently-abled) toilet on the same platform will be dismantled by the Railways once the new block is operational. Another proposed toilet block at PF 10A of Thane station is under planning and will be executed in coordination with the ongoing SATIS project on the platform and east-side circulating area" he said.
In line with CSR provisions, the Railway authorities have confirmed that water supply and electricity will be provided free of cost for operations and maintenance of the toilet blocks. Additionally, DMart has committed to carrying out repairs and regular maintenance of all facilities, while the Railways will retain responsibility for maintaining all sewage lines.
Central Railway observes the International Day of Yoga- 2025 with the theme-“ Yoga for One Earth, One Health”The proposal aligns with the broader redevelopment plan for Thane and Kalyan stations, currently under review by the Railway Board. "In view of the planned renovations, RLDA (Rail Land Development Authority) will make efforts to preserve the new or refurbished toilet blocks by adjusting girder placements. If demolition becomes unavoidable during future redevelopment, RLDA will reconstruct the toilets at suitable alternative locations. However, according to present planning, no demolition is anticipated for at least the next three years" further added official.
