A case of rape of a first year student has come to light on the campus of a law college in South Kolkata. Three accused have been arrested in the case. They have been sent to police custody till July 1.

Kolkata Law College Case: A first-year student of a law college in South Kolkata was allegedly raped by an alumnus and two senior students of the institute on the campus. All three accused have been arrested. The main accused Monojit Mishra, a former student and current organizing secretary of TMCP's South Kolkata district, was produced in Alipore court on Friday (27 June 2025) along with two other accused. They were sent to police custody till July 1. This also includes the security guard of the college.

A senior Kolkata Police official said that the results of the victim's medical examination confirm her allegation of gang rape. Opposition parties have reacted sharply to this incident, targeting the state government. Supporters of the Left parties, BJP, Congress and AIDSO clashed with policemen outside the Kasba police station. Police said that the process of recording a confidential statement before a judicial magistrate on behalf of the victim is also underway.
The main accused is himself a lawyer in criminal cases in the police and sessions court.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident, which took place on the evening of June 25, and has asked the Kolkata police to file a detailed action report within three days. This gruesome incident at the South Calcutta Law College has brought back horrific memories of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the city's RG Kar Medical College in August last year. College sources said that the main accused in the recent incident is a former student of the college and surprisingly, he is a lawyer in criminal cases in the Alipore Police and Sessions Court.
Police have confirmed that the two other accused are current students of the institute and seniors of the victim. The college administration said the main accused was recently appointed as a temporary non-teaching staff at the institute for a contract period of 45 days.
