Exact dates Poundland is set to close 49 stores in the UK

Around 1,000 jobs are reportedly at risk as a major retailer is set to close nearly 50 of its stores across the UK. High street chain Poundland is due to close 49 sites this summer.

This includes 10 that closed on August 10 - with more to follow in the coming weeks, about which more in a moment. As reported by the Evening Standard, the brand has undergone huge structural changes after changing hands earlier this summer.

It was bought by Gordon Brothers, a US investment firm that once owned Laura Ashley, having previously been owned by Pepco Group. Poundland retail director Darren MacDonald said: “When a store nearby closes, we understand how disappointing that is for customers, but nevertheless look forward to welcoming them to another Poundland store in the future.”

He added that Poundland “remains a key player in UK discount retail, with millions of customers annually and a well-loved brand and proposition.” On top of the store closures, the restructuring plans include negotiating rent reductions at specific store locations.

Along with these sites, Poundland's frozen and digital distribution centre in the South Yorkshire village of Darton is expected to close later this year. This means that its stores will carry far fewer cold food items and no frozen goods.

And by early 2026 it is planned the chain's distribution base in the West Midlands town of Bilston will shut. Further cost-cutting changes include no longer selling items online.

It is also planned the chain will expand its womenswear and seasonal collections. But the High Court still needs to approve these amendments.

Poundland's former owners, Pepco, recently recorded a 6.5 per cent decline in the chain's revenue, which fell to £830 million for the six months ending in March. Pepco said this drop was due to to “extremely difficult trading conditions”.
