Tucked away on the banks of the Exe Estuary is a charming town that looks like it was lifted straight from Europe. The buildings are tall and narrow with curved gables, just like in Holland and there's no shortage of things to do.
Topsham in Devon is an historic port town. It was once used as a point of transport for the wool of Devon to be taken to the Netherlands. This shipping culture led to the development of the European architecture the town is now famous for.
Merchants returning to England often used Dutch bricks as ballast in their ships, inspiring the builders to recreate the distinctive Dutch-style.
Aside from the beautiful buildings there's plenty to do in Topsham. Artisan shops and cafes line the pretty streets. According to Muddy Stilettos, the town is packed with some of the best shops and eateries in the country.
For a proper posh meal where the food looks as gorgeous as it tastes, try The Michelin-approved Salutation Inn. If it's a cake and coffee you're after then Circle is a great shout - you could even pick up some local art from the cafe if something takes your fancy.
If the houseplants and local art at Circle isn't enough for you, Muddy Stilettos also recommends checking out some of the lovely retailers in Topsham. For children's clothes there's Squid and Kid, and if you prefer your clothes pre-loved then you can't miss Nest.
If you dont like to shop and would rather explore the great outdoors then Topsham has something for you too. There's plenty of scenic walks in and around the town.
If you're feeling adventurous, try taking the Exe Estuary path to Exmouth. It's a relatively short walk, taking around 40 minutes one way.
Once you reach Exmouth you can take a train back to Topsham - or explore more of Devon.
