Mirra Andreeva is making her debut in Montreal this week. The ATP and WTA Tours alternate between Montreal and Toronto for the Canadian Open every year, and this is the teenager's first time playing here. And something else in the city has caught her eye - a Katy Perry concert.
The No. 4 seed is keen to see the singer live while they're both in Montreal but Andreeva believes the show falls on her match day. However, her coach, Conchita Martinez, has already committed to going, whether or not Andreeva can come.
"I heard that she would perform here like one week before the tournament started, so I got super excited," Andreeva said of Katy Perry's upcoming concert.
"Then I found out that she's performing on Thursday I think, and that would be the day when I would play a match.
"So I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to go, but Conchita told me that she's going to go anyway. Either she goes alone or with me. She doesn't really care.
"I would be super excited to see her live, but we're going to see with scheduling and, yeah, we're going to see if I'm able to go or no."
Andreeva and Martinez, a former Wimbledon champion, have a great relationship on and off the court. The 18-year-old recently reached the quarter-finals at SW19, while Martinez was playing in the legends' invitational doubles event.
The world No. 5 promised to head to Martinez's matches to cheer her on with a sign - and she delivered. Andreevaturned up with a homemade poster adorned with diamantes that read: "Let's go! Senorita. Top spin. YOU ARE GOLDEN."
If Andreeva does get to go to the Katy Perry show, she could put her poster-making skills to use again and bring a special sign for the American singer.
But the teenager will first have to worry about her opening match. As one of the top seeds, Andreeva has received a bye directly into the second round and will face Canadian star Bianca Andreescu.
However, Andreescu rolled her ankle on match point on Monday as she beat Barbora Krejcikova and was left close to tears.
The former US Open champion later said: "I just have to wait to see tomorrow morning basically what the prognosis is and then go from there. I'm hoping it's nothing serious."
