Russian papers and military bloggers are discussing the prospect of Russia using nuclear weapons to strike Ukraine after Kyiv launched brutal strikes on Vladimir Putin's airbases.
The country is reeling after Ukrainian drones are reported to have destroyed more than £5 billion worth of strategic bombers in what some pro-Kremlin commentators have described as Russia's "Pearl Harbour".
The coordinated attacks that were over a year in the planning wiped out some 40 planes at air bases located as far away as the Arctic and Siberia.
The attacks represent a stunning intellignece failure and has sparked a vicious backlash in the Kremlin, as a furious Putin is said to be looking to punish those repsonsible for the disaster.
Vladimir Osechkin, a renowned Kremlin critic with strong contacts inside Russia's security services, claimed the Rusian President was on the war path.
Putin is reported to be holding meetings with the General Staff, FSB and FSO to determine which high ranking officers in the FSB's Counterintelligence will walk the plank for the spectacular failure.
The list of the "guilty" will be drafted starting Monday, according to FSB informants.
Meanwhile, Sky News' Moscow reporter says some sections of the the media are openely discussing whether Putin should retaliate with a nuclear strike on Ukraine.
Some argue that the country's updated nuclear doctrine allows for such a response because this was an attack on Russia's nuclear-capable bombers.
The humiliating setback has infuriated Russian pro-war bloggers, who took to social media to attack the Kremlin and Putin over what they see as government ineptitude and even collusion with Ukraine.
One blogger in a furious rant posted to social media said: "
Vladimir Vladimirovich: I report the situation. "They f****d our strategic planes up. 95th, 22nd...Tomorrow there will be pederastic negotiations.
"I feel they twist your d**k in your ear. We do not need any negotiations. Today we have been f****d in the mouth. We have been f****d behind our cheek, in Irkutsk.
"They showed their strength. They showed their strategies work. They spat in our face again. They spat in our intelligence and f****d it in the mouth, because we do not work.
"We have devices that should check every truck but trucks get in. This black plague came to f**k the entire Russia in the mouth.
"Every day we have one regiment dying. Our losses are indescribable. We have been fighting for 4 years. The government doesn't give a f**k, Vladimir Vladimirovich. Aliev is Mishustin's friend. The State Bank is next to the 'White House'. They openly began to help Ukraine."
