Stefanos Tsitsipas has announced his shock split from Goran Ivanisevic less than two months after they started working together. They only worked together for two tournaments, with Tsitsipas going 1-2 in matches and suffering a first-round retirement at Wimbledon. But their blockbuster player-coach partnership is already over.
Former world No. 3 Tsitsipas had piled praise on Ivanisevic and his tough attitude when they started working together. But it may have been their undoing, as the Croatian went on TV and ripped into Tsitsipas' fitness levels and said: "I have never seen a more unprepared player in my life."
Now, Tsitsipas has confirmed that he will no longer be working with Ivanisevic. The current world No. 29 shared a statement on Wednesday on social media.
"Working with Goran Ivanisevic was brief but an intense experience and a truly valuable chapter in my journey," it read.
"I'm thankful for the time, effort and energy he dedicated to me and my team. As we are now following our separate ways, I have only respect for Goran - not just for what he's achieved in tennis, but also for who he is as a person. I wish him nothing but the very best moving forward."
Tsitsipas linked up with Ivanisevic after the French Open, and the 2001 Wimbledon champion joined him for his two grass-court events in Halle and SW19.
But Ivanisevic publicly called Tsitsipas out on Serbian TV after the 26-year-old was forced to retire injured while trailing qualifier Valentin Royer 6-3 6-2 in the first round of Wimbledon.
The former world No. 2 told : "It's simple and it's not simple. I've talked to him a lot of times. If he solves some things outside of tennis, then he has a chance and he'll return to where he belongs, because he's too good a player to be out of the top 10.
"He wants, but he doesn't do anything. All 'I want, I want', but I don't see that progress. I was shocked, I have never seen a more unprepared player in my life. With this knee, I am three times more fit than him. This is really bad."
Tsitsipas initially enjoyed Ivanisevic's confrontational coaching style. Ahead of Wimbledon, the world No. 29 said: "I'm at a stage of my life and my career where I want something refreshing, I want something new, I want something exciting, I want something that has a different language to it, a different language programmed.
"One of truth, one of honesty, and one of even, you know what? I'd say Goran is strict on me and he's very tough on me. Any other player would probably freak out and be like, 'How the heck is he allowed to talk to me like that?' But I need this, because I need the truth, and I need to have someone that's tough with me."
After ending his partnership with Ivanisevic, who previously coached Novak Djokovic and Elena Rybakina, Tsitsipas is set to reunite with a familiar face. According to SDNA, he will work with his dad, Apostolos, again.
Their coaching relationship has been turbulent, with Tsitsipas sometimes arguing with his parents in the box mid-match, and they had a messy coaching split last summer after the 12-time title winner said his dad had not been "very smart or very good" at listening to his feedback.
