Dubbed the “big, beautiful bill” by Trump himself, the package passed 215 to 214, with two Republicans siding with Democrats to oppose it and one member voting present. It now heads to the Senate, where lawmakers will have a chance to approve or alter its provisions.
The bill revives and extends a series of tax cuts that were first introduced during Trump’s initial term in 2017 but set to expire soon. In addition, it allocates billions more for defense spending and funds the president’s controversial mass deportation agenda.
The legislation also temporarily eliminates taxes on overtime pay and tipped wages—two high-profile campaign promises Trump emphasized throughout his successful 2024 presidential bid.
“What we’re going to do here this morning is truly historic, and it will make all the difference in the daily lives of hard working Americans,” House Speaker Mike Johnson said ahead of the vote.
Notably, the bill introduces major spending cuts to key social programs. Medicaid, which provides healthcare to low-income Americans, and SNAP, the food assistance program used by more than 42 million Americans, both face significant rollbacks under the new package. Despite its tight margin, Republicans on Capitol Hill hailed the bill as a turning point. Johnson celebrated the win by declaring the bill “gets Americans back to winning again.”
The legislation carries a staggering cost, with estimates suggesting it will add $5.2 trillion (£3.9 trillion) to the national debt and increase the budget deficit by roughly $600 billion in the upcoming fiscal year.
Those hefty figures—and the looming burden of rising interest payments—played a key role in Moody’s recent decision to downgrade the U.S. credit rating.
Adding to the controversy, the more than 1,000-page bill was released only hours before the vote, leaving open the possibility that additional provisions or hidden line items have yet to be uncovered. For now, however, on social media, Trump supporters are celebrating the bill’s passage as proof that he’s “delivering on his promises” and “putting America first again.” Let us look at some of the reactions:
