NEW DELHI: India’s golden boy Neeraj Chopra achieved a long-awaited milestone at the Doha Diamond League 2025 , becoming the first Indian ever to breach the 90-metre barrier in international javelin competition.
With a thunderous throw of 90.23 metres, Chopra not only rewrote his personal and national record but also cemented his place in Indian athletics history.
While Chopra finished second behind Germany’s Julian Weber , who threw an impressive 91.06 metres, the moment was still historic for Indian sports. PM Narendra Modi , among millions of proud Indians, congratulated Neeraj on X (formerly Twitter), writing:

“A spectacular feat! Congratulations to Neeraj Chopra for breaching the 90 m mark at Doha Diamond League 2025 and achieving his personal best throw. This is the outcome of his relentless dedication, discipline and passion. India is elated and proud.”
In response, Neeraj graciously acknowledged the Prime Minister’s message:
“Thank you shri @narendramodi ji for your kind words and encouragement. I hope to continue and give my best for the country always!”
The javelin star also reflected on the emotional weight of the moment, saying the result was “bittersweet.”
While proud of breaching the 90m barrier, finishing second echoed a familiar pattern for Chopra, similar to his experiences at Stockholm and Turku where he also placed second despite record-breaking performances.
Chopra revealed that persistent groin issues had limited him in recent seasons, but he now feels physically stronger and more confident.
“This year, I feel much better… I believe I can throw more than 90m in the upcoming events.”
